Nichrome is a resistive material made out of varying amounts of nickel, chromium, and iron. Its most common usage is as a resistance wire used in heating, but it can be used in other applications as well.
Most metals oxidize quickly when heated in air and become brittle, however, nichrome has a unique property that allows it to develop an outer layer of chromium oxide when heated, which protects the heating element from further degradation.
