Magnetic Wire

This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the Magnetic Wire category on DigiKey.com

Magnet wire products are characterized by their solid cross sections and very thin insulation, consisting of a varnish-like layer of polyamide, polyurethane or similar polymer material. It is used primarily in the construction of electromagnetic devices such as transformers, inductors, motors, solenoids, and similar devices, where its characteristically thin insulation enables increased winding density and better thermal transfer compared to wire types with thicker insulation systems.

SelectionCharacteristics

Wire Gauge: The gauge rating of the wire, typically expressed in AWG (American Wire Gauge) standard.

Conductor Material: Indicates the material composition of the conductive portion of the wire.

Jacket (Insulation) Material: Indicates the material composition of the insulation used for the jacket of the wire.

Jacket (Insulation) Diameter: Indicates the diameter of a cable/wire product’s outermost layer; a product’s overall thickness.

Length - Approximate: Indicates the approximate overall length of the wire.

Ratings: Minimum performance standards of the device, which are typically set by a third party.
