Single Conductor Cables (Hook-Up Wire)

This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the Single Conductor Cables (Hook-Up Wire) category on DigiKey.com

Single conductor cable and wire products include both insulated and non-insulated products adapted for a variety of uses, including point-to point signal wiring, test & measurement, and power transmission. Magnet wire, the material insulated with a thin film of polyurethane or similar material and commonly used for constructing motor windings, inductors, and other electromagnetic components is specifically excluded, and can be found in a separate product family.

SelectionCharacteristics

Cable Type: Indicates the physical form or structure of the cable.

Wire Gauge: The wire size or size range of the wire, typically expressed in terms of American Wire Gauge.

Conductor Strand: Indicates the number and size of the strands of which each conductor in a cable/wire is composed; a value of 7/30 for example would indicate that each is formed from seven 30 AWG strands. All else equal, conductors formed from larger numbers of smaller strands tend to be more flexible.

Conductor Material: Indicates the conductive material used in the wire.

Jacket (Insulation) Material: Indicates the material used for the outermost jacketing of the cable.

Jacket (Insulation) Diameter: Indicates the diameter of a cable/wire product’s outermost layer; a product’s overall thickness.

Jacket (Insulation) Thickness: Characterizes the typical thickness of the outer layer of insulating material in a wire or cable.

Length: Indicates the length of the wire.

Voltage: Typically this represents the maximum voltage rating to which a device will meet its given specifications. Exceeding this voltage rating may damage the device and other system components.

Operating Temperature: Recommended operating temperature, typically given in a range or as a maximum. Exceeding these temperatures may affect performance or damage the device and other system components.

Jacket Color: Indicates the color of the outermost insulation layer of a wire or cable product.

Ratings: Minimum performance standards of the device, which are typically set by a third party.

Features: These are different capabilities or properties of the device such as Abrasion, Chemical, or Oil Resistance or Biological Compatibility.
