This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the Multiple Conductor Cables category on DigiKey.com
Multiple Conductor Cables are cables that are composed of separate individual wires that have been bundled together within a larger outer insulation jacket. With a variety of wire gauges, number of conductors and materials allowing a wide range of applications ranging from power to telecommunication data transfer. Lengths available range from 1 foot to over 5000 feet.
SelectionCharacteristics
Cable Type: Indicates the physical form or structure of the cable.
Number of Conductors: Indicates the number of conductors within the overall cable, including how many subgroups of conductors there are (noted as paired, triad, or quad) and whether those subgroups are twisted or not.
Wire Gauge: The gauge rating of the individual conductors within the cable’s overall construction.
Conductor Strand: Indicates the number and size of the strands of which each conductor in a cable/wire is composed; a value of 7/30 for example would indicate that each is formed from seven 30 AWG strands. All else equal, conductors formed from larger numbers of smaller strands tend to be more flexible.
Conductor Material: Indicates the material composition of the conductors of the cable.
Jacket (Insulation) Material: Indicates the material used for the outermost jacketing of the cable.
Jacket (Insulation) Diameter: Indicates the diameter of a cable/wire product’s outermost layer; a product’s overall thickness.
Shield Type: Whether or not the cable possesses an electrically insulating barrier that helps to reduce or eliminate electromagnetic interference, and if so what type of barrier.
Length: Indicates the length of the cable.
Jacket Color: Indicates the color of the outermost insulation layer of a wire or cable product.
Ratings: Minimum performance standards of the device, which are typically set by a third party.
Features: These are different capabilities of the device such as Abrasion, Chemical, or Oil Resistant, Biological Compatibility, or Drain Wire.
Voltage: Typically this represents the maximum voltage rating to which a device will meet its given specifications. Exceeding this voltage rating may damage the device and other system components.
Operating Temperature: Recommended operating temperature, typically given in a range or as a maximum. Exceeding these temperatures may affect performance or damage the device and other system components.
Usage: The typical expected usage the manufacturer designed the cable for.
Jacket (Insulation) Thickness: Characterizes the typical thickness of the outer layer of insulating material in a wire or cable.
