DIN MOUNTING BASICS

I need a 48V power supply to mount in 19" racks. I see DIN rail mounts available for 19" racks.
Picture of Mean Well EDR-120-48 shows power supply mounted vertically on DIN rail, Can it be rotated 90 degrees so the rack space used is 1RU?

Power supply DigiKey 1866-1442-ND, Description AC/DC DIN RAIL SUPPLY 48V 120W THANK YOU

Or do you have another type of PS that would work better in a 19"rack? Maybe I just add a shelf?

steven.hughes, welcome to the Forum! You could try rotating this whole part by 90 degrees if you wanted to, but as Irfan said the back mounting unit is fixed. Power supplies like these don’t typically have an “up-right” sensor at all. You would still have to follow the recommended spacing diagram if you did rotate it. I do not see any full rack units that provide DC power. We only have AC power distribution units that fit in a rack. You could cut a din-rail and mount it the other way by rotating the DIN rail vertically, but this isn’t recommended by the manufacturer.

Hello steven.hughes,

Welcome to the DigiKey TechForum.

If I understand this right, you want to be able to rotate this power supply on the din rail by 90 degrees. The bracket on the power supply is fixed, no rotation can occur from what is shown on the drawing in the data sheet page 4:

I’m not sure if there is a power supply that is din rail mounted that can.

One more thing to consider, instead of having a shelf, you may want to have a whole different cabinet for the power supply portion. Most industrial applications have dedicated cabinets for power and then their racks are separate. I do see some potential thermal issues with my first solution because there are recommended spacing dimensions for supplies like these.

All the similar DIN mounted power supplies that are thin enough to fit in less than 1U (1.75inch) rack space have vent holes on the top of the power supply and heat rises. If you did try to turn one of these sideways you may want to consider putting a fan on the vents for forced air.

we have one very nice large NEMA Type 3 Outdoor Enclosure for this project with cooling fans, in fact the DC cooling system is what this power supply is for

Can you recommend another type that can sit on a shelf as in not DIN rail mounted?

Couple options:

LSP-160-48T

Thank you the HEP-150-48A will be perfect, ordering now.

For future reference, the “Rack Mount” mounting type attribute selects for supplies adapted for such use.

These are typically going to be platforms designed for redundancy/hot swap applications and used in conjunction used with an appliance/accessory that provides physical fixation and interconnect, either pursuant to some standard such as CRPS or something more vendor-specific such as this example.
