Industrial Encoders are devices that are designed to translate motion or position changes into electrical signals. By tracking the motion either optically, mechanically or by changing magnetic fields, encoders can output electrical signals either in code such as by binary, octal, hexadecimal or grey code or by changing output signals such as frequency or differential voltage. With a range of supply voltages, mounting types, output resolution per revolution and actuators, encoders can fill a range of applications. These are made for use in an industrial setting.


SelectionCharacteristics

Specifications to determine which industrial encoder is right for your application.

Encoder Type: How the encoder operates and collects the information to be communicated to the system, such as absolute, incremental, optical, etc.

Output Type: Indicates the type of electrical signal the device provides, such as binary, digital, octal, voltage, etc.

Pulses per Revolution: Measurement resolution; the number of output pulses produced by an encoder when the input shaft is rotated by 360°.

Voltage - Supply Typically represented by a range, this indicates the low and high voltage limits which one can expect standard operation. Voltages outside this range may damage the device and other system components.

Actuator Type: The actuator used to input the information into the encoder, such as a shaft, thumbwheel, cable pull, etc.

Detent: Indicates whether or not a device provides tactile feedback by varying the torque required to rotate the shaft.

Built in Switch: Indicates if a device includes a feature to interrupt a circuit, in addition to providing an encoding function.

Mounting Type: Indicates how the device is attached.

Orientation: Identifies the orientation of the encoder when compared to the system, such as horizontal, vertical, etc.

Termination Style: Selection of termination style used to connect the device to a system, such as wire leads, screws, PC pins, etc.

Rotational Life (Cycles Min): The number of rotational cycles to which a device can be subject while remaining within some set of specifications, under manufacturer-defined test conditions.
