Ferrite Cores

This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the Ferrite Cores category on DigiKey.com

Ferrite cores are a magnetic device used in the windings of transformers or other wound components. The chemical makeup of these devices help to prevent eddy currents. These are created in different form factors such as: E, toroid, ER, multi-hole, etc. and come in many different sizes. Key parameters are going to be the size, form factor or core type, and inductance factor.

SelectionCharacteristics

Core Type: Indicates a core’s physical shape in terms of industry-standard designators.

Supplier Device Package: This is what the manufacturer calls the package of this device. They are manufacturer specific. It is typically best to use the actual dimensions from the datasheets rather than to go by this terminology when designing your circuit.

Material: The material from which the device’s magnetic core is formed.

Diameter: Indicates the overall outer diameter for the part.

Inductance Factor (Al): Typical factor related resulting inductance to number of wire turns wound around the core. Has units of inductance per turn^2.

Tolerance: Characterizes the extent of permitted variability of overall device inductance among samples of a given part number, resulting from variations in manufacturing.

Gap: Indicates whether or not a core is designed to have an air gap when assembled.

Effective Permeability (µe): The relative permeability of the core as an assembled unit.

Initial Permeability (µi): A property characterizing the magnetic behavior of the core material, relative to a vacuum.

Core Factor (ΣI/A) mm⁻¹: The ratio of effective core length to effective cross-sectional area.

Effective Length (le) mm: The effective length of the magnetic path through the core.

Effective Area (Ae) mm²: The effective area of the core cross section that is perpendicular to the magnetic flux path.

Minimum Core Cross Section (Amin) mm²: The minimum area of the core cross section that is perpendicular to the magnetic flux path.

Effective Magnetic Volume (Ve) mm³: The overall volume of magnetic material in the core.

Finish: Indicates the finish/plating material applied to the contacts of the part.

Height: Indicates the overall height of the part.

Length: Indicates the overall length of the part.

Width: Indicates the overall width of the part.
