FFC FPC cables and extensions

Need help finding the correct connector/extension for this 5 pin ribbon cable. I need it to be around 11” total but the longest I can find is just under 6” so I plan on connecting the two. These are the two that I found but I’m not sure if they’re compatible with each other or with my system… any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yes these two parts will mate together.

Hi luke.32.fuller,

If you’re wondering whether the HFF-05U-06-ND flat-flex cable will mate properly with the 5-pin connector on your board, that is an open question. If you are asking only if the HFF-05U-06-ND will mate with the A101330CT-ND, then yes it will.

Just looking at your image of that 5-pin connector on your board, it looks like the pin spacing (pitch) is wider than the 0.5mm (0.020 in) of the HFF-05U-06-ND, but you should carefully measure that to know for sure.

Assuming it is the right size, the only way to join two cables would be to make a pcb and solder two of those connectors onto it with traces connecting the two together.

Does the pitch refer to the distance between the pins on the connector or the pins in the cable? The pins on the connectors are more than .5 mm apart but the pins in the cable (the larger cable that is in the picture) measured .5mm. I’m assuming they’re the same, and they just have a different pin quantity.

The cable is going to run along the bottom of a safe under foam ( it’s connecting power to the locking mechanism in the back. ), so I don’t know how I feel about putting a pcb there. That would also defeat the purpose of using low profile cable. So I’ll need to find something longer. If the pitch is actually larger than .5mm I would probably have better luck finding something around 11” in length right?

Hi luke.32.fuller,

Pitch just refers to the center-to-center spacing of the contacts on whatever thing you are measuring. Typically, but not always, the connector pitch is the same as the cable pitch. You’ll have to figure that out in this case.

By zooming in on your last image and comparing the pitch of that 3-pin SOT-23 chip (Q8), which is typically about 1.9mm, I estimate that the pitch of your connector is probably 1mm. If that is correct, AND if your cable is the same pitch, then the 0152670743-ND might be a good option.

Thanks David! I’m gonna roll with this and see if it works. You’ve been a huge help and just saved me a lot of time. Thank you.

OK, Glad to help. Obviously, no guarantees on this as I can’t directly measure from across this digital divide, but I hope it works out for you!
