Greases and lubricants are used to protect surfaces against wear caused by friction. Grease is a semi-solid substance that becomes liquid when heated, while a substance considered a lubricant is already liquid. These are critical in protecting equipment in applications such as Industrial Automation & Controls to prevent downtime.
SelectionCharacteristics
Type: Indicates the specific type of product, typically by use and/or material composition.
Grade: Indicates the consistency or viscosity of the product as a numerical value defined by a third party. Greases typically use the NLGI (National Lubricating Grease Institute) numbering format and oils typically use the ISO (International Organization for Standardization) numbering format.

Viscosity @ 40°C: The expected viscosity of the product at 40°C
Viscosity Index: A unitless indication of the change in the product’s viscosity due to temperature. A larger number = a higher resistance to change in viscosity.
Color: The dominant color of the product.
Texture: An indication of the feel of the material.
Thickener: Typically indicates the thickening agent used in the product.
Operating Temperature: Recommended operating temperature, typically given in a range or as a maximum. Exceeding these temperatures may affect performance or damage the material and other system components.
Base Oil: Indicates the material composition of the base oil of the product, where indicated.
Dropping Point: The temperature at which a drop of material falls from a test cup’s orifice due to a controlled application of temperature.
