Heat Sinks

Passive heat exchangers that transfer the heat generated by an electronic component to a fluid medium, often air or a liquid coolant, dissipating it away from the device to maintain an optimal operating temperature. They are designed to maximize the surface area in contact with the medium surrounding it. They are usually made out of copper or aluminum due to their high thermal conductivity.


SelectionCharacteristics

Type: Defines the orientation and profile of the heat sink.

Package Cooled: Defines the size of IC the heat sink is designed to cool.

Attachment Method: Indicates the intended mechanical attachment mechanism(s) for a device.

Shape: Describes the overall shape of the heat sink.

Length: The overall length of the part.

Width: The overall width of the part.

Diameter: The overall diameter of the part.

Fin Height: Typically the dimension of the heatsink along the axis that is perpendicular to attachment surface for the device being cooled, but varies with heatsink geometry. Orthogonal to length/width dimensions.

Power Dissipation @ Temperature Rise: Approximate thermal power dissipated via natural convection at specified heat sink temperature above ambient.

Thermal Resistance @ Forced Air Flow: The temperature rise of a cooled object over ambient per unit of heat dissipated, with air movement at the indicated velocity in Linear Feet per Minute.

Thermal Resistance @ Natural: The temperature rise of a cooled object over ambient per unit of heat dissipated, under conditions of natural convection.

Material: Indicates the material composition of the device.

Material Finish: Describes the surface treatment applied to the heat sink.
