LCD, OLED Character and Numeric

This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the LCD, OLED Character and Numeric category on DigiKey.com

Products within this family are used for visual communication of text oriented information. Based on a variety of display technologies including liquid crystal, e-ink, and organic LEDs, they are distinguished from other display technologies by being conceptually divided into an array of addressable regions, each of which is capable of representing a single symbol, character, or digit. Though ill-suited for displaying images, video, or similar graphical information, their relative simplicity offers advantages in cost, design complexity, durability, etc. in circumstances where such capability is not required. Note that devices which use conventional LEDs to form luminous character segments are specifically excluded and grouped separately.

SelectionCharacteristics

Number of Characters: Describes display size in terms of the maximum number of letters/numbers that can be displayed simultaneously.

Display Format: Indicates the arrangement of character spaces on a display, as (number of characters per row) x (number of rows).

Character Format: Describes the pattern of pixels/display elements used to form characters on the display.

Display Type: Describes the technology used for the display.

Display Mode: Indicates whether a display is designed to be illuminated by light transmitted from behind, reflected from the front, or some combination thereof.

Character Size: Describes the physical dimensions of a standard character space on a display.

Outline Lx W x H: Characterizes a device’s outer dimensions. (Length x Width x Height)

Viewing Area: The dimensions of the portion of a display that is usable for showing images or characters.

Backlight: Indicates type and color(s) of transmissive display illumination incorporated in a display, or absence thereof.

Voltage - Supply: Typically represented by a range, this indicates the low and high voltage limits which one can expect standard operation. Voltages outside this range may damage the device and other system components.

Dot Size: Indicates the dimensions of an individual pixel in a display. Not applicable to 7-segment or 14-segment displays.

Interface: Indication of which interface(s) or protocol(s) are used by the device to communicate with other components in the system.

Controller Type: Identifies the integrated circuit in a device that provides control and communications functions.

Operating Temperature: Recommended operating temperature, typically given in a range or as a maximum. Exceeding these temperatures may affect performance or damage the device and other system components.

Text Color: Indicates the color(s) of the text on the display.

Background Color: Indicates the color(s) of the background on the display.
