Modular Cable Pin-out Style: Reverse or Straight

There has always been some questions regarding the pin-out on Modular Cables.

When doing a search for modular cables one filter to look at is the Style.

If you choose the Reverse and Standard style These Cable options are what will come up.

What is the difference between the Reverse and Standard style?

A quick way to determine the difference on the Flat Cables assemblies is to lay them flat.

The Reverse style will have a plug with a Tab up and the other end will have the Tab down.
This sometimes might be referred to as “straight through” because of the pin-out. Pin 1 goes to pin 1, pin 2 goes to pin 2, etc. These are used for Data transfer.

If we look at DigiKey part number A2663R-25-ND from Assmann (AT-S-26-6/6/S-25/R), it is the Reverse style. On the Datasheet it will have the Drawing showing the orientation of the Plugs with the pin-out.

The pin-out will be straight through.

The Standard style will have both tabs on the plug on the same side.
This sometimes might be referred to as “reversed” or “crossover” because of the pin-out.
These are used for voice transfer, like in a telephone.

The pin-out will be crossed.

Another way is to check is to take the plugs and put them side by side and look at the pin-out.

This can be helpful for a coiled type of cable assembly. The orientation of the Plugs gets turned due to the cable being coiled.

If we look at DigiKey part number A1662R-10C-ND , Assmann part number (AT-C-26-6/6/B-10) , this will be a Flat Coiled Cable that is a Standard style.
The Datasheet will show it with the tabs on the plugs being one up and one facing down. This can make it confusing.

Make sure to always look at the pin-out.
