Modular - Flat Cables

This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the Modular - Flat Cable category on DigiKey.com

Products in this family are cable products designed for use with a particular style of interconnect system known as “modular” connectors, commonly used in telecommunications applications such as wired Ethernet and telephone systems. Flat cable products are distinguished by their generally rectangular cross section, resulting from the individual conductors within being oriented side-by-side and maintaining their relative positions throughout the cable length. This arrangement provides for convenient connector application but reduces electrical performance, limiting their utility to low-speed applications such as voice communications.

SelectionCharacteristics

Cable Type: Whether the cable is coiled, like common telephone handset cords, or straight.

Number of Conductors: How many electrically isolated conduction paths there are in the cable.

Length - Coil Retracted: For coiled/retractile cables, the typical length of the coil in its relaxed or non-stretched state.

Length - Coil Extended: For coiled/retractile cables, the typical length of the coil in its extended or stretched state.

Length: For uncoiled straight cables, the overall length of the cable.

Jacket Color: Indicates the color of the outermost insulation layer of a wire or cable product.

Wire Gauge: The gauge rating of the individual conductors within the cable’s overall construction.

Conductor Strand: Indicates the number and size of the strands of which each conductor in a cable/wire is composed; a value of 7/30 for example would indicate that each is formed from seven 30 AWG strands. All else equal, conductors formed from larger numbers of smaller strands tend to be more flexible.

Jacket (Insulation) Material: Indicates the material used for the outermost jacketing of the cable.

Cable Width: Width; the greater of the two cross-sectional dimensions.

Cable Height: Thickness; the lesser of the two cross-sectional dimensions.

Coil Diameter: For retractile (coiled) cables, the nominal outer diameter of the cable in a retracted or non-stretched state.

Shielding: Whether or not the device possesses an electrically insulating barrier that helps to reduce or eliminate electromagnetic interference.
