This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the Optical Sensors - Photointerrupters - Slot Type - Logic Output category on DigiKey.com
Products in the logic output, slot type photointerrupter family integrate a light source and a matching photodetector in an opposed-facing orientation, together with supporting circuitry needed to make a binary (two-state) determination of whether or not an opaque object or material is present in the space between the emitter and receiver. They differ from transistor output devices of the same name by virtue of this additional receive-side processing, which simplifies application at some expense of application flexibility.
SelectionCharacteristics
Specifications to determine which slot type photointerruptor is right for your application.
Sensing Distance: The distance within which the sensor can receive an input and produce a valid output.
Sensing Method: Describes the manner in which a sensor interacts with a sensed object or surface.
Output Configuration: How the output of the sensor is electrically configured, such as analog, open collector, phototransistor, etc.
Mounting Type: Indicates how the device is attached.
Current - Supply: This represents the maximum current to which a device will meet its given specifications. Exceeding this current may damage the device and/or other system components.
Voltage - Supply: Typically represented by a range, this indicates the low and high voltage limits which one can expect standard operation. Voltages outside this range may damage the device and other system components.
Response Time: The amount of time it takes for the sensor to respond to a change in input.
Operating Temperature: Recommended operating temperature, typically given in a range or as a maximum. Exceeding these temperatures may affect performance or damage the device and other system components.
Package/Case: Indicates the type of protective case used on an electronic component to allow easy handling, installation, and protection. This selection was determined to be the closest industry standard applicable to the suppliers device packaging. Typically it is best to check the actual dimensions from the datasheet rather than depend on this terminology when designing your circuit.
