This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the Optical Sensors - Reflective - Analog Output category on DigiKey.com
Products in the analog output reflective optical sensor family incorporate an optical emitter and light-sensitive element (typically a phototransistor) mounted adjacent to each other and facing the same direction, such that light from the emitter that is reflected by an object in the sensor’s field of view can be detected by the sensing element within the device. Analog output sensors of this type deliver the signal produced by the photosensor directly with minimal processing, requiring the user to provide their own interpretive mechanism to determine object detection.
SelectionCharacteristics
Specifications to determine which analog output reflective optical sensor is right for your application.
Sensing Distance: The distance within which the sensor can receive input and produce a valid output.
Sensing Method: Describes the manner in which a sensor interacts with a sensed object or surface.
Voltage – Collector Emitter Breakdown (Max): The maximum voltage between the collector and emitter of the transistor that can be tolerated by the transistor. Exceeding this voltage will damage or destroy the device.
Current – Collector (Ic) (Max): The maximum current that can run through the collector of the transistor. Exceeding this current will damage or destroy the device.
Current – DC Forward (If) (Max): The maximum DC current that the sensor is designed for. Exceeding this current will damage or destroy the transistor.
Output Type: The kind of transistor or diode at the output of the device.
Response Time: The amount of time it takes for the sensor to respond to a change in input.
Mounting Type: Indicates how the device is attached.
Package/Case: Indicates the type of protective case used on an electronic component to allow easy handling, installation, and protection. This selection was determined to be the closest industry standard applicable to the suppliers device packaging. Typically it is best to check the actual dimensions from the datasheet rather than depend on this terminology when designing your circuit.
