-These standard shapes and sizes are maintained by JEDEC-
DigiKey provides package size for two-terminal SMD parts; both imperial and metric sizes.
0201 is imperial and 0603 is metric.
Here is the breakdown of the numbers, 0603 approximate dimensions are 0.6mm x 0.3mm which is as simple as removing the decimal point to make that pack size. The imperial size for the 0603 is 0201 which is 0.02 in × 0.01in.
There are some packages that are not as easy to decode such as 0402, 0.4 mm × 0.2 mm, but the imperial 01005 approximate dimensions are 0.016in x 0.008in. JEDEC has rounded the numbers to create the 01005. With the introduction of the 0201(metric), the 01005 package is technically closer to the 0201, but the imperial for the 0201 is package number 008004 with approximate dimensions of 0.010in x 0.005in. So JEDEC rounded the imperial number of the 0201 to 008004, which is rounded down to the nearest even number. In the chart these values are in bold to best represent them.
The idea of a slightly smaller pack sizes was not considered when they rounded the imperial length and width and has caused confusion between the 0201 and 0402. Below is a chart of the basic pack sizes, metric and imperial.
Metric | Imperial | Metric Approx. Dimensions L x W | Imperial Approx. Dimensions L x W |
---|---|---|---|
0201 | 008004 | 0.25 mm × 0.125 mm | 0.010 in × 0.005 in |
03015 | 009005 | 0.3 mm × 0.15 mm | 0.012 in × 0.006 in |
0402 | 01005 | 0.4 mm × 0.2 mm | 0.016 in × 0.008 in |
0603 | 0201 | 0.6 mm × 0.3 mm | 0.02 in × 0.01 in |
1005 | 0402 | 1.0 mm × 0.5 mm | 0.04 in × 0.02 in |
1608 | 0603 | 1.6 mm × 0.8 mm | 0.06 in × 0.03 in |
2012 | 0805 | 2.0 mm × 1.25 mm | 0.08 in × 0.05 in |
2520 | 1008 | 2.5 mm × 2.0 mm | 0.10 in × 0.08 in |
3216 | 1206 | 3.2 mm × 1.6 mm | 0.125 in × 0.06 in |
3225 | 1210 | 3.2 mm × 2.5 mm | 0.125 in × 0.10 in |
4516 | 1806 | 4.5 mm × 1.6 mm | 0.18 in × 0.06 in |
4532 | 1812 | 4.5 mm × 3.2 mm | 0.18 in × 0.125 in |
4564 | 1825 | 4.5 mm × 6.4 mm | 0.18 in × 0.25 in |
5025 | 2010 | 5.0 mm × 2.5 mm | 0.20 in × 0.10 in |
6332 | 2512 | 6.3 mm × 3.2 mm | 0.25 in × 0.125 in |
6863 | 2725 | 6.9 mm × 6.3 mm | 0.27 in × 0.25 in |
7451 | 2920 | 7.4 mm × 5.1 mm | 0.29 in × 0.20 in |
Companies categorize these parts based on the pack size that is near the same dimension. For example, If the packaging is listed as a 0201 this does not mean it is exactly 0.25mm x 0.125mm, it could be 0.27mm x 0.130mm. If size does matter the best thing to do is double check the physical size of the part, which Digi-key includes in most of the product attributes or is provided in the manufacturer datasheet/drawing.
A common problem is the mix-up of metric and imperial. There are package sizes 0201, 0402, and 0603 in both metric and imperial values and can be mixed up when building the footprint and ordering the parts.
