Switching Converter, SMPS Transformers

This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the Switching Converter, SMPS Transformers category on DigiKey.com

Switching Converter, SMPS Transformers are used to construct switch mode power supplies (SMPS) which are a type of power supply that uses semiconductor switching techniques rather than standard linear methods to provide the required output voltage. The basic switching converter consists of a power switching stage and a control circuit that may be designed to work with specific chipsets.

SelectionCharacteristics

Type: Indicates the style and configuration of the device.

Applications: Application is the type of equipment or environment the device will be used in, they are tested and typically rated by a third party to ensure certain minimum standards for the application they are intended for.

Intended Chipset: An enumeration of control devices with which a given transformer may be particularly suited for use.

Chipset Manufacturer: The manufacturer of the control/drive IC with which a transformer was specifically designed to function.

Voltage - Primary: Indicates the nominal input voltage/voltage range of a sample design with which a device is intended for use.

Voltage - Auxiliary: Characterizes the voltage derived from an auxiliary transformer winding in a reference circuit that incorporates a given device.

Voltage - Isolation: Indicates the level of electrical isolation provied between the primary and axuiliary windings of the transformer.

Inductance @ Frequency: Characterizes transformer primary inductance at the test frequency indicated, subject to manufacturer-defined test conditions.

Frequency: Denotes the specific frequency range or operating frequency for which the device is designed or optimized.

Operating Temperature: Recommended operating temperature, typically given in a range or as a maximum. Exceeding these temperatures may affect performance or damage the device and other system components.

Mounting Type: Indicates how the device is attached.

Size / Dimension: The physical dimensions of the device. Typically listed as length and width.

Height - Seated (Max): Indicates how far the device will extend above the surface to which it has been attached.

Footprint: The dimensions of the area on a printed circuit board required to mount a device.

Style: Refers to the specific construction or design configuration of the transformer’s core and winding arrangement.
