Trailing Zeros in TDK Numbers

TDK Corporation often has a 3 digit suffix at the end of their part numbers that is not always clearly associated with a given series specifications. A good example is the inductor series B82144B2.

TDK Electronics ordering codes typically end with a 4-digit suffix marked by a letter in the first position, followed by 3 digits. However, since zero is used to mark a digit as “blank” they are frequently omitted in documentation, leading to occasional confusion over the correct orderable part number. For example, all the part numbers in the B82144B2 series end with a “K” or a “J” followed by three trailing zeros. The letter calls out tolerance (K=10%; J=5%) but the zeroes are essentially null.

The choice of whether to include these trailing zeros comes down to the context of the documentation or the preference of the person listing the parts. We show the manufacturer number as B82144B2104J000, but if you scroll to the bottom of the display page you’ll see a list of alias numbers where we show “B82144B2104J” as a viable option. When in doubt, you can usually count on those alias numbers to show you if the omission of leading or trailing zeros reflects a spec change, or if it’s merely a formatting choice. If you see the shortened version of a part number listed under “part number alias” that’s a sure sign that they are the same model number.
