Transformer protection

I have an off grid solar system all of a ssudde

I could not figure out how to edit my post. I have an off grid solar system. 2 inverters. all os a sudden power dropped. One of the inverters was wacked out, all kinds of weird readings. took it off line and everything is fine now. the bad inverter blew out every transformer in the house! I do have a log for the inverters and the good one showed a constant 240v. the bad one showed low voltages down to 210v. Any ideas what happened? maybe put some MOV’s in the transformers?

That indicates it sent a large overvoltage or surge out. The absolute best way to prevent that from happening again is to have surge protection directly coupled to the inverter output so that it protects everything downstream.

Surge suppressors on each individual device can work, but usually not anywhere near as well and often at a higher cost.

Good point about the protection side. I’d also consider adding a slow-blow fuse or inrush current limiter if the transformer has a pretty high startup surge, since that can save a lot of headaches later.

Was that a surge or a sustained incorrect voltage. It takes some effort to burn our every transformer in the house.

As I said, could be either based on the limited info available.

The info about the data logs did not mention overvoltage (only good and low voltage) but the characteristics of the data collection are unknown. So the logging could miss shorter overvoltage conditions as well as surges (I assume the logs would show sustained overvoltage).
