Circular Cable Assemblies

Circular cable assemblies are composed of a length of cable material terminated at one or more ends with a circular connector, which are generally round in cross section and tend to have contacts arranged according to a polar, rather than rectangular, layout. Common circular connector styles represented include XLR, DIN, metric circular connectors in M5 through M40 sizes.


SelectionCharacteristics

1st Connector Type: Describes the style or geometry of the first of the cable assembly’s two connectors.

1st Connector Gender: Describes the contact style of the first connector in the cable assembly, generally male pin or female socket.

1st Connector Number of Positions: The total number of contact positions available within the first of the assembly’s connectors.

1st Connector Number of Positions Loaded: The number of positions within the connector that are loaded with an electrical contact. Some connectors do not use all of their available contact positions, for reasons of keying, code compliance, or elsewise.

1st Connector Shell Size, Insert: The style, form factor, or type of connector, for the first connector in the cable assembly.

1st Connector Orientation: The orientation code of the first connector in the system. Orientation determines what the connector can mate with; a given orientation code is incompatible with all other orientation codes.

1st Connector Mounting Type: Describes how the first connector in the cable assembly is physically attached to the system.

2nd Connector Type: Describes the style or geometry of the second of the cable assembly’s two connectors, if there is one.

2nd Connector Gender: Describes the contact style of the second connector in the cable assembly, generally male pin or female socket.

2nd Connector Number of Positions: The total number of contact positions available within the second of the assembly’s connectors, if there is one.

2nd Connector Number of Positions Loaded: The number of positions within the connector that are loaded with an electrical contact. Some connectors do not use all of their available contact positions, for reasons of keying, code compliance, or elsewise.

Length: The length of the cable assembly, this length may or may not include the connectors. Please consult the individual datasheets.

Assembly Configuration: Describes whether the cable assembly is a standard part, or if it includes a T, Y, or similar adapter at one end.

Cable Type: Describes the type or physical cross-section of the cabling used in the cable assembly.

Cable Material: Describes the jacketing material used by the cabling that was used in the cable assembly.

Color: The dominant color of the cable assembly, typically referring to cable jacketing color.

Shielding: Whether or not the device possesses an electrically insulating barrier that helps to reduce or eliminate electromechanical interference, and if so what type of barrier.

Ingress Protection: Defines how much protection the device has against contaminants and moisture and of what type it is if applicable.

IP Ratings

IP (Ingress Protection) ratings such as (IP20, IP65, IP67, etc.) define how likely water and dirt will get into the system. The first number represents dirt and solid contaminants while the second represents water and liquids.

Solids Liquids
1 Protected against solids larger than 50mm. Protected against vertically falling drops of water. Limited Ingress permitted.
2 Protected against solids larger than 12.5mm. Protected against vertically falling drops of water with the enclosure tilted up to 15 degrees from vertical. Limited ingress permitted.
3 Protected against solids larger than 2.5mm. Protected against spraying water up to 60 degrees from vertical. Limited ingress permitted for 3 minutes.
4 Protected against solids larger than 1mm. Protected against water splashed from any direction. Limited ingress permitted.
5 Protected against dust. Limited ingress of dust permitted. Will not affect operation of equipment 2-8 hours. Protected against jets of water. Limited ingress permitted.
6 Dust tight. No ingress of dust 2-8 hours. Protected against powerful jets of water. Limited ingress permitted.
7 ______________________ Protected against the effects of immersion in 15cm-1m for 30 minutes.
8 ______________________ Continuous immersion in water up to 3m for long periods of time.
9 ______________________ Protected against high pressure jets of hot water. (30 seconds)
9K ______________________ Protected against high pressure jets of hot water. (2 minutes)

Usage: Indicates the type of application, equipment, or environment the device will be used in, they are tested and typically rated by a third party to ensure certain minimum standards for the application they are intended for. You could use one with a higher rating, but you cannot use one with a lower rating as it will fail in that application. For example, you could use an industrial rated device to replace a standard device, but you cannot replace the industrial device with the standard device.
