This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the D-Sub Cables category on DigiKey.com
D-subminiature connectors are so named in reference to the shape of the outer shroud surrounding the contacts at their mating end, which resembles the letter ‘D’, and because at the time of their introduction the interconnect density they offered was among the highest available. Products in this family are finished-goods cable assemblies with connectors applied, though products with a single connector applied are included. Due to use precedents established over many decades of service, there are significant variations in the actual connectivity provided by various cables; use care to select a product suitable for the intended purpose.
SelectionCharacteristics
1st Connector: Describes the gender and mating geometry of the first connector in the cable assembly.
2nd Connector: Describes the gender and mating geometry of the second connector in the cable assembly, or specifies what sort of termination (if any) is on the other end of the assembly.
Type: Describes the style, configuration, or form factor of the connectors in the cable assembly.
Number of Positions: The total number of conductive paths in the cable assembly.
Length: The physical length of the cable assembly, not including its terminated connectors.
Shielding: Whether or not the device possesses an electrically insulating barrier that helps to reduce or eliminate electromechanical interference, and if so what type of barrier.
Color: The dominant color of the cable assembly.
Usage: The typical expected usage the manufacturer designed the cable assembly for.
Contact Finish: The type of plating the electrical contacts of the cable assembly have been finished with.
