A nut is a type of fastener with a threaded hole used in conjunction with a mating bolt to fasten multiple non-threaded parts together. The parts are held together by a combination of thread friction, bolt stretch, and compression of the parts. Nuts are identified by thread size, material, thickness, plating, and type such as cage, clip, hex, jam, knurled, locking, square, and thumb.

Type: Indicates the specific type of nut.
Thread Size: Indicates the thread size of compatible screws and bolts. For more information on screw sizes see Choosing a Screw by the Thread Size.
Thickness: Indicates the overall thickness of the nut.
Width: Indicates the overall width of the nut.
Material: Indicates the material composition of the nut.
Plating: Indicates the finish/plating material applied to the nut.
