IC Sockets

This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the IC Sockets category on DigiKey.com

Sockets provide for repeated insertion, removal, substitution and replacement of Integrated Circuits (ICs) and transistors in a circuit. Mounting types include chassis, panel, connector, board surface and through-hole. Socket features include board guides, carriers, flanges, and open and closed framing. They are differentiated by post pitch, contact material and finish, termination style and contact finish.

SelectionCharacteristics

Type: Indicates the style and configuration of the device.

Number of Positions or Pins (Grid): Indicates the number of independent circuits present and describes their physical arrangement.

Pitch - Mating: The nominal center distance between adjacent contacts on the side of a device that is intended to connect to a complementary connector or device package.

Contact Finish - Mating: Indicates the material with which the mating portion of a product is plated or finished.

Contact Finish Thickness - Mating: Characterizes thickness of the finish/plating material applied to the mating region of a connector.

Contact Material - Mating: Identifies the material that makes electrical contact with the leads of an IC or transistor.

Mounting Type: Indicates how the device is attached.

Features: These are different capabilities or properties of the device such as board guide, carrier, or programmable.

Termination: Selection of termination style used to connect the device to a system, such as Press-fit, solder, or wire wrap.

Pitch - Post: The distance between contacts on the side of a socket that typically interfaces with a circuit board.

Contact Finish - Post: Indicates the surface finish/plating material present on the portion of a product intended for permanent attachment in an application.

Contact Finish Thickness - Post: Characterizes thickness of the finish/plating material present on the portion of a product intended for permanent attachment in an application.

Contact Material - Post: Identifies the material in the socket that makes electrical contact between an adapter and a host assembly.

Housing Material: Indicates the material composition of the housing of the device.

Operating Temperature: Recommended operating temperature, typically given in a range or as a maximum. Exceeding these temperatures may affect performance or damage the device and other system components.
