I know nothing about this stuff, but I was told to get an “external power adapter in Musica’s rear DC inlet”. See picture- what “size” works for this stereo?
Thx!
Hello,
Welcome to the Digikey TechForum. We do have these 20vdc, 3 amp or 4.5 amp options. You will need to verify the size of the output connector by measuring the diameter of the opening to see which one will fit. You will also need to verify what style wall outlet you need is since the list has 2 North American plugs and 1 European plug.
Hi ebesan,
It is often difficult to measure the dimensions on such a connector. Perhaps there is documentation available somewhere which states what size of connector is required. To help in identifying this, can you tell us the exact make and model of your device.
Thanks for the quick answer. Hope this helps.

The snips from the manual unfortunately don’t help with the barrel dimensions. We do have 1939-1931-ND, a 20V 3.25A desktop adapter that comes with a Barrel Plug Kit with these sizes (1.3mm x 3.5mm, 2.1mm x 5.5mm, 2.5mm x 5.5mm). This may have the barrel size you need. Also note the barrel when attached to the cable would need te be attached the correct way so the center of the plug is positive. There is info on page 12 of 23 of datasheet that shows the polarity.
Thx so much! The picture above shows 3A. Will 3.25A work? Also (I don’t know anything about this stuff) pg 12 says “Option upon request: STRAIGHT Female Barrels”. Isn’t this a male/female setup?
If OK, I will order this.
Hi ebesan,
@Jeff_2258’s suggestion should work for you. You can always use a supply capable of supplying more current but not less. The voltage needs to be very close, and is just fine in his suggestion.
Regarding “straight female barrels” comment, a female barrel connector is just the type which has a metal cylindrical contact with a hollow center where the mating “male” pin is inserted. This matches your unit. The only question is the diameter of the inner pin and the diameter of the outer cylinder. The 1939-1931-ND covers the most common sizes.
Not that I care, but why are you not using the AC input rather than the DC input? This allows you to plug it directly into a wall outlet rather than use an external AC-DC power supply.
GOOD Question!
The plug would never stay in. We wrestled for years w/ tape and museum wax, got a replacement from the company (now defunct), but that never worked.
One ex-member of that company now offers advice. When I asked about this issue he posted - Regarding your power cord: a number of Musicas were built with a slightly smaller than normal rear cord inlet. This makes the cord a very tight fit. If you don’t push the cord in hard, it won’t be fully seated and will fall out or have an intermittent connection. The solution is to be sure the cord is fully seated inside the inlet. It may take some force to push it in.. (we tried)
If Como were still around we’d rummage through our supply of power cords and see if we could find one that fit better, as the cord thickness varied, and send you one. But with Como gone, that’s not an option.
**Your other option is to use an Amico external power adapter in Musica’s rear DC inlet instead of the power cord.If you don’t have one you can buy a generic one here: [15DYS850-180280W-K Ideal Power Ltd. | Power Supplies - External/Internal (Off-Board) | DigiKey]"
So that brought me to you. If you have any other ideas, great!
Thx
ebesan
For the part number 15DYS850-180280W-K this is a 18V 2.8A power supply with a center positive 2.1x5.5x12mm plug , this is not enough voltage for this equipment , however the one Jeff_2248 listed above is the correct voltage and does have the correct size barrel plugs with it , I am not sure where you got the info from to use the 15DYS850-180280W-K but if that is the correct size barrel for the this equipment the 1939-1931-ND will work .
Thanks Craig
Oh my! Interesting story! Well, we do have that part number they gave you:
So you could order that one as well. With that part number, we can verify that the connector is a 5.5mm outside diameter, 2.1mm inside diameter barrel connector. Also, based on that, they are saying it would work fine with down to 18V.
Having the slightly higher 20V and at least 3A of the 1939-1931-ND might give it a little more headroom, which theoretically might provide a little better sound at high volumes, depending on the internal architecture, but that’s not at all a certainty. In any case, either would probably work just fine.
We do also carry those cords, but it would be a pure guess as to whether any of ours would work any better than what you’ve already tried.
Also should note we have parts for a potential fix of your AC Inlet if you’re handy with soldering:

Hmmmm. soldering? Think I’ll pass on that. But I did order the 1939.
You guys have been really helpful; it’s always nice to run across folks who know stuff and like to share, even for a small order like this.
