Potentiometer upgrade/replacement ID

I have rotary welding positioners that use a potentiometer labeled “wh5-1a 4k7” to control table speed. These Pots have failed in multiple units and I’d like to replace them with a more robust Pot. Unfortunately with the thousands available here, I haven’t been able to get a direct cross over part number. I have been able to locate this part on Amazon, but it appears to physically the same part as was installed in these positioners and I’d like to avoid repairing them with the same junk. Could someone help me out?

Thank you,
Will

Welcome to the forum.

Couldn’t find a data sheet for this part but based on the Amazon page with that part number it’s a single turn 4.7K linear potentiometer with a 6mm/0.25" shaft.

Here’s a search for all the similar parts.

The original part has a very rare feature of a shielding terminal on the metal housing, didn’t see any with that feature in the search result.

Also the mechanical type and arrangement of the contacts, the shaft/housing diameters and lengths may not work for the mechanical layout of the product you’re fixing. So check the data sheets and drawings to see if you can make it fit (pot shafts can be cut shorter).

For projected life check the data sheets and if unclear it’s generally safe to assume that a $30 cermet pot will last longer than a $3 carbon pot.

The shielding terminal is unused in my application, the overall height in the enclosure is only .8" I would rather purchase a $30 compatible part instead of 25 $3 parts! Thank you for narrowing it down for me.

We do not carry that part number, and looking at the datasheet, it is not a valid number.
The value has to be 3 digits, for 4.7K (4700 ohms) would be 472, and I believe the shaft length is in the XX.X format for mm length. The shaft length will include the threads, so it is measured from the body of the potentiometer, to the end of the shaft.
With a valid part number, the manufacture name, and the quantity, we should be able to get a quote for it, which will include the cost, lead-time, and minimum order quantity. You can send the request to applications.engineering@digikey.com to get a Non-Catalog quote.
