This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the Voice Record and Playback category on DigiKey.com
Voice record and playback ICs are specialized devices that allow implementation of audio record and playback functions with minimal component count and design effort. Often integrating a small audio power amplifier to enable a small speaker to be driven, the amount of audio information they are capable of storing is typically quite limited, though sufficient for recording brief messages, prompts, warnings, or similar information.
SelectionCharacteristics
Interface: Indication of which interface(s) or protocol(s) are used by the device to communicate with other components in the system.
Input Signal: Indicates the signal format(s) the device was designed to receive audio data in.
Output Signal: Indicates the signal format(s) the device was designed to transmit audio data in.
Sampling Frequency: The rate (or range of rates) at which a device samples an analog input signal for storage in digital form.
Duration: Describes a device’s maximum recording capacity in terms of audio duration. Value ranges reflect influence of sampling rate selection.
Filter Pass Band: Describes the pass band of integral anti-aliasing filters, for devices that include one.
Messaging: Indicates whether the device can store and retrieve multiple separate messages or is limited to a single message.
Oscillator Type: Indicates if a device operates using an internal or external clock source, or is capable of either/both.
Features: These are different capabilities or properties of the device such as auto mute and automatic gain control.
Operating Temperature: Recommended operating temperature, typically given in a range or as a maximum. Exceeding these temperatures may affect performance or damage the device and other system components.
Voltage - Supply: Typically represented by a range, this indicates the low and high voltage limits which one can expect standard operation. Voltages outside this range may damage the device and other system components.
Mounting Type: Indicates how the device is attached.
Package / Case: Indicates the type of protective case used on an electronic component to allow easy handling, installation, and protection. This selection was determined to be the closest industry standard applicable to the supplier device packaging. Typically it is best to check the actual dimensions from the datasheet rather than depend on this terminology when designing your circuit.
Supplier Device Package: This is what the manufacturer calls the package of this device. They are manufacturer specific. It is typically best to use the actual dimensions from the datasheets rather than to go by this terminology when designing your circuit.
