In our previous sensor post, we explored the Single-Ended Operational Amplifier Topology for Precision Sensor Applications. Amplifier circuits play a critical role in precision signal chains, amplifying the sensor signal while preserving fidelity. In this post, we will focus on the Difference Amplifier, a fundamental and essential topology for sensor applications.
The Difference Amplifier
Many sensors output a differential signal, where the physical property being measured is represented by the difference between two voltages.
One advantage of using a sensor with a differential output is that any common-mode voltage—i.e., voltage that is present on both outputs of the sensor—can be rejected by an amplifier with a differential input and a high common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR). In addition to rejecting the common-mode voltage from the sensor output, differential signaling offers several other advantages in a system.
One benefit is that the high common-mode rejection makes the system robust against electromagnetic interference (EMI). External EMI introduces noise to both conductors of the differential signal; this common-mode noise is rejected by the difference amplifier preserving and amplifying the differential signal of interest for an excellent signal-to-noise ratio (SNR).
Another advantage of differential signaling is that its amplitude is twice as large as a single-ended signal, which results in a 6 dB improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This doubling of the output signal amplitude makes differential-input amplifiers very valuable in applications with a low supply voltage, where there is insufficient voltage range to permit a large signal swing.
Working of Difference Amplifier
The difference amplifier is the most basic and widely used topology for amplifying precision differential signals (Figure 3). A difference amplifier accepts a differential input signal, rejects common-mode voltage (VCM), amplifies the differential input voltage (VDIFF), and outputs an amplified, single-ended signal that is proportional to the difference between the two input voltages.
Its transfer function is simply VOUT = G × (VDIFF), where VDIFF is (V2 – V1) and G is the gain of the amplifier circuit equal to the ratio (R2/R1).
Unlike a single-ended amplifier, where there is only one input, a difference amplifier works with two input voltages, V1 and V2. This is as opposed to the op-amp inputs, +IN and –IN. The common-mode voltage is defined as the average of the two input voltages, VCM = (V2 + V1)/2.
For example, with 5 V on V1 and 3 V on V2, the common-mode input voltage would be 4 V and the differential voltage would be 2 V. It is that 2 V differential signal that will be amplified at the output.
As previously mentioned, the common-mode rejection ratio of an amplifier with a differential input is denoted as CMRR = 20 × log10 (ADIFF/ACM).
Note that as the differential gain (ADIFF) increases and the common-mode gain (ACM) decreases:
- The common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) improves proportionally with the differential gain.
- This provides a significant advantage, allowing for both higher gain and improved CMRR simultaneously.
One other point to note is that CMRR tends to decrease as the frequency increases.
- It is essential to select a difference amplifier with the required common-mode rejection at the signal frequency of interest.
Resistor Tolerance and Amplifier Precision
The Common-Mode Rejection Ratio (CMRR) of a difference amplifier heavily depends on how accurately the resistor ratios (R2/R1 and R2’/R1’) are matched. Achieving this level of precision can be challenging when using discrete components, like the circuit in Figure 3.
For example, while a precision op-amp might boast a CMRR of 140 dB or higher, a 4-resistor difference amplifier built with resistors having a 0.1% tolerance and a gain of 1 can only achieve a minimum CMRR of 54 dB. This is approximately equivalent to the precision of only a 9-bit ADC, which may work for basic tasks but falls short for high-precision applications that demand better CMRR and resistor matching.
Another critical factor is gain accuracy. To amplify a signal for a specific gain, specific resistor values would be chosen for R2, R1, R1’, and R2’. Any tolerance away from the nominal resistor values results in ratio mismatch and therefore gain error. Moreover, as resistors change with temperature, these mismatches result in gain drift over time.
Such issues in a discrete amplifier circuit can be mitigated by very well-matched resistor networks like, for example, the Analog Devices’ LT5400 family with resistor ratio matching of 0.01% or the LT5401 with 0.003% matching.
In an integrated difference amplifier, amplifier and resistors are fabricated on a monolithic integrated circuit (IC) ensuring precise matching during manufacturing. This design provides superior CMRR, minimal gain error, and reduced gain drift since the resistors share the same material and temperature.
Many integrated solutions offer CMRR of 80 dB–90 dB, gain error as low as 0.005%–0.02%, and drift as minimal as 1 ppm/°C.
Application of Difference Amplifiers
Current Sensing with a Difference Amplifier
Difference amplifiers are widely used for precision current sensing, as shown in Figure 5. The current flowing to the load passes through a low-resistance shunt (sense) resistor, creating a voltage across it that is directly proportional to the load current. This small differential voltage, representing the sensed current, is then amplified to fully utilize the input voltage range of an analog-to-digital converter (ADC).
The circuit shown in Figure 5 is an example of high-side current sensing, where the shunt resistor is placed between the power supply and the load (measuring the current in this location), rather than low-side sensing, where the shunt resistor is located between the load and ground. High-side current sensing offers several advantages, including the ability to detect short circuits to ground at the load.
In high-side differential current sensing, two key voltages must be considered:
- The differential voltage (VDIFF), which is the voltage across the shunt resistor (the difference between input V2 and input V1).
- The common-mode voltage (VCM), which is present on both V2 and V1.
In this example, the op amp’s +IN input sees a voltage VSUPPLY (or VLOAD + VDIFF) and the op amp’s –IN input sees VLOAD (or VSUPPLY – VDIFF). The difference amplifier will amplify the difference voltage and reject the common-mode voltage.
In many applications, including high-side current sensing, the common-mode input voltage can be much greater than the amplitude of the differential voltage. In fact, it can often be much greater than the supply voltages of the op amp—sometimes as high as hundreds of volts. As the common-mode error at the output is directly proportional to the common-mode voltage at the input, it follows that systems with exceptionally high common-mode input voltage necessitate a correspondingly high CMRR to attain a precise analog output signal.
One of the key attributes of a difference amplifier is that it can reject high common-mode voltages, well beyond the supply voltage range. This is possible because the resistor network on each input attenuates the input voltages V1 and V2 to the point that op amp inputs +IN and –IN are within the specified input voltage range.
Level Shifting
One of the advantages of a difference amplifier is its ability to easily shift the output voltage level. Many difference amplifiers include a reference input for this purpose. By applying a voltage to the reference pin, the output can be set to match this reference voltage when the input difference is zero. This feature is especially useful for aligning the amplifier’s output with a desired reference voltage. For instance, you can set the output to half the supply voltage for bidirectional sensing with a single supply (Figure 6) or to the midpoint of an ADC’s input range to maximize dynamic range (Figure 7).
For example, if a signal oscillates between ±2.5 V and needs to be fed into an ADC with a 0 V to 5 V input range,it’s important to center the signal at half the ADC’s full-scale range to make use of the entire input range.
Figure 7 shows a simple way to achieve this. Alternatively, a single voltage can be applied to both REF input pins to directly set the output reference voltage.
Conclusion
Difference amplifiers are essential in precision sensor applications, providing accurate signal amplification while rejecting common-mode noise. They are ideal for current sensing, improving signal-to-noise ratios, and aligning output levels with an ADC. Integrated solutions with high CMRR and accurate resistor matching improve performance, making them essential for high-precision systems.
